On October 27, there was a massive shooting at a The Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that devastated many lives. The shooter, Robert Bowers, who is 46 years of age, screamed anti-Semitic slurs before going on a shooting spree that killed 11 people. This attack is believed to be one of the deadliest attacks towards Jews in US history.
The attack left six others injured, including four police officers. It was one of the most horrific incidents to ever occur to the Jewish community in the US. There were reports of shots fired in the lobby of the Synagogue as people fled to escape the gunfire, and police were alerted to the scene at 9:45. Robert Bowers has been arrested and charged with 11 counts of criminal homicide, six counts of aggravated assault, and 13 counts of ethnic intimidation. Just five minutes before the major shooting, the suspect posted on Gab (a social network site that is popular for its advocates for free speech) “HIAS likes to bring in invaders that kill our people…”
There have been many citizens that paid their respects to the victims of this hateful and cruel massacre. Monday, there were many participants in the “Wear blue for Pitt campaign” in order to denounce anti-semitism and support awareness for the victims of the shooting. People, even students, around the world participated in this campaign.
