Upper School Sexual Harassment Discussions

Recently, Robert Dove from the Student Counseling Center at Rhodes discussed the topic of sexual harassment with the upper school students to help them better understand what sexual harassment is.

First Mr. Dove gave a presentation at convocation to introduce the topic to the students. The following week, each grade met individually with Mr. Dove; the boys in the morning, and the girls in the afternoon. With 8 separate 90-minute discussions, each student had an opportunity to either share personal struggles or support fellow classmates in a safe and accepting environment.

Every person learned how to respond when they see harassment occurring, and the dangers of freezing up when you could intervene. They each walked out of the discussion with the knowledge that they could help if the need ever arose.

Mr. Dove also shared his stories regarding harassment, giving students a personal account to understand harassment through.

Christina Sigler shared her opinion on the importance of these discussions: “For me personally, the most important thing was that we not only talked about it, but we talked about how to fix it, which is something that I think is left out of most of these conversations”.
